Because many slips and falls happen at home, it is important to be educated on fall prevention and environmental safety. By taking some simple steps toward a safe environment, injuries may be avoided.
Noted below are some interventions for specific areas in your home, that may help to increase your awareness of fall prevention:
Exterior Entry Area
- Handrails installed on both sides of the stairs to allow for a secure grip
- Motion detected lighting provides safety and security when approaching the entry area
Hallways & Staircases
- Bright, sufficient lighting to allow a clear view of the area
- Install continuous handrails on both sides of stairwell
Garage
- Bright, sufficient lighting to give a clear view of the area
- Walkways free of obstacles to remove any trip hazards
- Handrails or grab bars to support entrance into house
Kitchen
- Side mounting the faucet to your sink will make it easier to reach. You will no longer need to reach across the full length of your sinkPlace the microwave on the counter or in a base cabinet for easier access
- Relocate frequently used items to a more accessible height
- Install cabinet knobs and pulls that allow for easy opening of doors and drawers
- Install bright task lighting at food preparation area
- Walkways free of obstacles to remove any trip hazards
Bedroom
- Assure that the bed height is easily accessible
- Walkways free of obstacles to remove any trip hazards
- Install a night light to guide your way to the bathroom
Bathroom
- Bright, sufficient lighting over the sink and tub/shower to give you clear view of your surroundings
- Install a comfort height toilet to make it easier to sit down and stand up
- Using a chair in the tub will assist with a safe transfer, or replace the tub with a walk-in shower that will allow for safe transfers in and out
- Install grab bars at the toilet, tub/shower area to allow for easy and safe transition
- Install a medicine cabinet that allows for easy access
General items
- Wood floors and low nap carpet permit safer mobility around the home
- Remove all throw rugs from pathways
- DO NOT ever use a step ladder
