Zita Vigh, Catered Living Resident Assistant at Porter Hills Village, won the Aging Services of Michigan Caring Spirit Award!
A video crew was onsite Tuesday February 28th to interview her and her coworkers! Zita will be honored May at the Aging Services of Michigan Gala Event.
Caring Spirit Award:
This award recognizes the achievements of front-line staff and direct care employees, whose caring spirit has made a significant impact upon the lives of older adults while working for the nominating organization.
Zita Vigh epitomizes the “caring spirit" of our staff Porter Hills. From the day she began as a resident assistant at Porter Hills Village over 20 years ago, she has embraced her residents and peers and has taken them into her heart. Upon first meeting Zita, you can immediately sense her compassion. When she smiles, you see her heart and know, without asking, that she will do her best to assist her residents and co-workers. She supports, encourages, and -- most importantly – she lives and models the Mission of Porter Hills. This is so ingrained in who Zita is, that several of her grandchildren have also been employed here as resident assistants upon her recommendation.
Her touch goes beyond the usual assistance with activities of daily life. Deeply rooted in her own faith and purpose, she seeks to understand and affirm that in others. Her ability to share the Porter Hills culture of respectfulness of and independence for residents is as natural to her as breathing. In addition, she willingly serves as a mentor to her peers, utilizing the wisdom she has gained through her experience. This is exemplified through the unappointed leadership role she so gracefully and graciously fills with her co-workers. In this unofficial role, she is able to set the model of organization and accountability which is so important in the direct care of residents.
During recovery from surgery, when most employees would focus on their well-being, Zita came in to visit both the residents she holds so close and the peers she mentors in an effort to contribute in the way she was able to during this time.
At a time in her life when others would be making plans for retirement, Zita’s drive and passion for her life’s calling continue to bring her to work each and every day, determined to make a difference in the lives of those she touches. And those she touches couldn’t be more grateful for her presence and impact in their lives.
And for these reasons, and so many more, Zita Vigh embodies and is well-deserving of the Caring Spirit Award.
Zita was born and raised in Hungary and moved to the United States in 1957. She met her husband Julius through the church that was sponsoring them; he was assigned to be her interpreter. They fell in love and married a year after they met, when she was 19 years old. He is responsible for teaching her the English language! They have 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy, and 19 grandchildren (2 of whom have worked here as Resident Assistants in the past 10 years).
